You can hit just as much topspin with a Continental grip as with a Western grip. It is just more comfortable and natural to do it with a more Western grip. I hit as much topspin as anyone at a 4.5 or 5.0 level with my Continental grip (and can windshield wiper it if I choose), it just isn't as natural a shot as with a more Western grip.
Topspin can be produced using an eastern grip, as Borg demonstrated, but it is easier to generate the necessary racket-head speed using a more extreme grip. For flat shots, an eastern grip is the best option. It is in fact extremely difficult to hit shots without spin if your grip is close to the western position.
Brush up on the back of the ball. Your racket head should dip below the ball in order to get the right angle, and your swing path should travel from low to high while also extending your racket in a forward swing motion to get the right amount of topspin. Hit the ball in front of your body.

The Western Forehand Grip is the most extreme grip on this list and provides players who are proficient with it a ton of top spin on their shots. The Western Forehand Grip Isn’t that popular at pro or recreational levels as it is incrediable hard to hit flat using this grip and low balls are nearly impossible if you are at the recreational level.
While there are acceptable variations to hit the forehand, the Semi-Western forehand grip is the best tennis grip that enables players to produce a topspin forehand. The amount of topspin with this grip is greater than other more conservative tennis grips like the eastern forehand grip.
The semi-western is the most common tennis forehand grip you’ll find in tennis today, and it is used by many of the top players. The benefit of this grip is that it allows for a great deal of wrist motion, whilst also allowing the player to hit through the ball.
